[1] For Yahweh will have compassion on Jacob, and will yet choose Israel, and set them in their own land. The foreigner will join himself with them, and they will unite with the house of Jacob. [2] The peoples will take them, and bring them to their place. The house of Israel will possess them in Yahweh’s land for servants and for handmaids. They will take as captives those whose captives they were; and they shall rule over their oppressors. [3] It will happen in the day that Yahweh will give you rest from your sorrow, from your trouble, and from the hard service in which you were made to serve, [4] that you will take up this parable against the king of Babylon, and say, “How the oppressor has ceased! The golden city has ceased!” [5] Yahweh has broken the staff of the wicked, the scepter of the rulers, [6] who struck the peoples in wrath with a continual stroke, who ruled the nations in anger, with a persecution that no one restrained. [7] The whole earth is at rest, and is quiet. They break out in song. [8] Yes, the cypress trees rejoice with you, with the cedars of Lebanon, saying, “Since you are humbled, no lumberjack has come up against us.” [9] Sheolⓘ from beneath has moved for you to meet you at your coming. It stirs up the departed spirits for you, even all the rulers of the earth. It has raised up from their thrones all the kings of the nations. [10] They all will answer and ask you, “Have you also become as weak as we are? Have you become like us?” [11] Your pomp is brought down to Sheol,ⓘ with the sound of your stringed instruments. Maggots are spread out under you, and worms cover you. [12] How you have fallen from heaven, shining one, son of the dawn! How you are cut down to the ground, who laid the nations low! [13] You said in your heart, “I will ascend into heaven! I will exalt my throne above the stars of God! I will sit on the mountain of assembly, in the far north! [14] I will ascend above the heights of the clouds! I will make myself like the Most High!” [15] Yet you shall be brought down to Sheol,ⓘ to the depths of the pit. [16] Those who see you will stare at you. They will ponder you, saying, “Is this the man who made the earth to tremble, who shook kingdoms, [17] who made the world like a wilderness, and overthrew its cities, who didn’t release his prisoners to their home?” [18] All the kings of the nations sleep in glory, everyone in his own house. [19] But you are cast away from your tomb like an abominable branch, clothed with the slain who are thrust through with the sword, who go down to the stones of the pit; like a dead body trodden under foot. [20] You will not join them in burial, because you have destroyed your land. You have killed your people. The offspring of evildoers will not be named forever. [21] Prepare for slaughter of his children because of the iniquity of their fathers, that they not rise up and possess the earth, and fill the surface of the world with cities. [22] “I will rise up against them,” says Yahweh of Armies, “and cut off from Babylon name and remnant, and son and son’s son,” says Yahweh. [23] “I will also make it a possession for the porcupine, and pools of water. I will sweep it with the broom of destruction,” says Yahweh of Armies. [24] Yahweh of Armies has sworn, saying, “Surely, as I have thought, so shall it happen; and as I have purposed, so shall it stand: [25] that I will break the Assyrian in my land, and tread him under foot on my mountains. Then his yoke will leave them, and his burden leave their shoulders. [26] This is the plan that is determined for the whole earth. This is the hand that is stretched out over all the nations. [27] For Yahweh of Armies has planned, and who can stop it? His hand is stretched out, and who can turn it back?” [28] This burden was in the year that King Ahaz died. [29] Don’t rejoice, O Philistia, all of you, because the rod that struck you is broken; for out of the serpent’s root an adder will emerge, and his fruit will be a fiery flying serpent. [30] The firstborn of the poor will eat, and the needy will lie down in safety; and I will kill your root with famine, and your remnant will be killed. [31] Howl, gate! Cry, city! You are melted away, Philistia, all of you; for smoke comes out of the north, and there is no straggler in his ranks. [32] What will they answer the messengers of the nation? That Yahweh has founded Zion, and in her the afflicted of his people will take refuge.

[1] For the LordH3068 will have mercyH7355(PielImpf) on Jacob,H3290 and will yet chooseH977(QalPerf) Israel,H3478 and setH3240(HiphPerf) them in their own land:H127 and the strangersH1616 shall be joinedH3867(NiphPerf) with them, and they shall cleaveH5596(NiphPerf) to the houseH1004 of Jacob.H3290 [2] And the peopleH5971 shall takeH3947(QalPerf) them, and bringH935(HiphPerf) them to their place:H4725 and the houseH1004 of IsraelH3478 shall possessH5157(HithPerf) them in the landH127 of the LordH3068 for servantsH5650 and handmaids:H8198 and they shall take them captives,H7617(QalActPtc) whose captivesH7617(QalActPtc) they were; and they shall ruleH7287(QalPerf) over their oppressors.H5065(QalActPtc) [3] And it shall come to pass in the dayH3117 that the LordH3068 shall give thee restH5117(HiphInf) from thy sorrow,H6090 and from thy fear,H7267 and from the hardH7186 bondageH5656 wherein thou wast made to serve,H5647(PualPerf) [4] That thou shalt take upH5375(QalPerf) this proverbH4912 against the kingH4428 of Babylon,H894 and say,H559(QalPerf) How hath the oppressorH5065(QalActPtc) ceased!H7673(QalPerf) the golden cityH4062 ceased!H7673(QalPerf) [5] The LordH3068 hath brokenH7665(QalPerf) the staffH4294 of the wicked,H7563 [and] the sceptreH7626 of the rulers.H4910(QalActPtc) [6] He who smoteH5221(HiphPtc) the peopleH5971 in wrathH5678 with a continualH1115 stroke,H4347 he that ruledH7287(QalActPtc) the nationsH1471 in anger,H639 is persecuted,H4783 [and] noneH1097 hindereth.H2820(QalPerf) [7] The whole earthH776 is at rest,H5117(QalPerf) [and] is quiet:H8252(QalPerf) they break forthH6476(QalPerf) into singing.H7440 [8] Yea, the fir treesH1265 rejoiceH8055(QalPerf) at thee, [and] the cedarsH730 of Lebanon,H3844 [saying], Since thou art laid down,H7901(QalPerf) no fellerH3772(QalActPtc) is come upH5927(QalImpf) against us. [9] HellH7585 from beneath is movedH7264(QalPerf) for thee to meetH7125(QalInf) [thee] at thy coming:H935(QalInf) it stirreth upH5782(PolePerf) the deadH7496 for thee, [even] all the chief onesH6260 of the earth;H776 it hath raised upH6965(HiphPerf) from their thronesH3678 all the kingsH4428 of the nations.H1471 [10] All they shall speakH6030(QalImpf) and sayH559(QalImpf) unto thee, Art thou also become weakH2470(PualPerf) as we? art thou become likeH4911(NiphPerf) unto us? [11] Thy pompH1347 is brought downH3381(HophPerf) to the grave,H7585 [and] the noiseH1998 of thy viols:H5035 the wormH7415 is spreadH3331(HophImpf) under thee, and the wormsH8438 coverH4374 thee. [12] How art thou fallenH5307(QalPerf) from heaven,H8064 O Lucifer,H1966 sonH1121 of the morning!H7837(Ketiv) [how] art thou cut downH1438(NiphPerf) to the ground,H776 which didst weakenH2522(QalActPtc) the nations!H1471 [13] For thou hast saidH559(QalPerf) in thine heart,H3824 I will ascendH5927(QalImpf) into heaven,H8064 I will exaltH7311(HiphImpf) my throneH3678 aboveH4605 the starsH3556 of God:H410 I will sitH3427(QalImpf) also upon the mountH2022 of the congregation,H4150 in the sidesH3411 of the north:H6828 [14] I will ascendH5927(QalImpf) above the heightsH1116 of the clouds;H5645 I will be likeH1819(HithImpf) the most High.H5945 [15] Yet thou shalt be brought downH3381(HophImpf) to hell,H7585 to the sidesH3411 of the pit.H953 [16] They that seeH7200(QalActPtc) thee shall narrowly lookH7688(HiphImpf) upon thee, [and] considerH995(HiplImpf) thee, [saying, Is] this the manH376 that made the earthH776 to tremble,H7264(HiphPtc) that did shakeH7493(HiphPtc) kingdoms;H4467 [17] [That] madeH7760(QalPerf) the worldH8398 as a wilderness,H4057 and destroyedH2040(QalPerf) the citiesH5892 thereof; [that] openedH6605(QalPerf) not the houseH1004 of his prisoners?H615 [18] All the kingsH4428 of the nations,H1471 [even] all of them, lieH7901(QalPerf) in glory,H3519 every oneH376 in his own house.H1004 [19] But thou art cast outH7993(HophPerf) of thy graveH6913 like an abominableH8581(NiphPtc) branch,H5342 [and as] the raimentH3830 of those that are slain,H2026(QalPasPtc) thrust throughH2944(PualPtc) with a sword,H2719 that go downH3381(QalActPtc) to the stonesH68 of the pit;H953 as a carcaseH6297 trodden under feet.H947(HophPtc) [20] Thou shalt not be joinedH3161(QalImpf) with them in burial,H6900 because thou hast destroyedH7843(PielPerf) thy land,H776 [and] slainH2026(QalPerf) thy people:H5971 the seedH2233 of evildoersH7489(HiphPtc) shall neverH5769 be renowned.H7121(NiphImpf) [21] PrepareH3559(HiphImpv) slaughterH4293 for his childrenH1121 for the iniquityH5771 of their fathers;H1 that they do notH1077 rise,H6965(QalImpf) nor possessH3423(QalPerf) the land,H776 nor fillH4390(QalPerf) the faceH6440 of the worldH8398 with cities.H6145(Ketiv) [22] For I will rise upH6965(QalPerf) against them, saithH5002(QalPasPtc) the LordH3068 of hosts,H6635 and cut offH3772(HiphPerf) from BabylonH894 the name,H8034 and remnant,H7605 and son,H5209 and nephew,H5220 saithH5002(QalPasPtc) the Lord.H3068 [23] I will also makeH7760(QalPerf) it a possessionH4180 for the bittern,H7090 and poolsH98 of water:H4325 and I will sweepH2894(PilpPerf) it with the besomH4292 of destruction,H8045(HiphInf) saithH5002(QalPasPtc) the LordH3068 of hosts.H6635 [24] The LordH3068 of hostsH6635 hath sworn,H7650(NiphPerf) saying,H559(QalInf) Surely as I have thought,H1819(PielPerf) so shall it come to pass; and as I have purposed,H3289(QalPerf) [so] shall it stand:H6965(QalImpf) [25] That I will breakH7665(QalInf) the AssyrianH804 in my land,H776 and upon my mountainsH2022 tread him under foot:H947(QalImpf) then shall his yokeH5923 departH5493(QalPerf) from off them, and his burdenH5448 departH5493(QalImpf) from off their shoulders.H7926 [26] This [is] the purposeH6098 that is purposedH3289(QalPasPtc) upon the whole earth:H776 and this [is] the handH3027 that is stretched outH5186(QalPasPtc) upon all the nations.H1471 [27] For the LordH3068 of hostsH6635 hath purposed,H3289(QalPerf) and who shall disannulH6565(HiphImpf) [it]? and his handH3027 [is] stretched out,H5186(QalPasPtc) and who shall turn it back?H7725(HiphImpf) [28] In the yearH8141 that kingH4428 AhazH271 diedH4194 was this burden.H4853 [29] RejoiceH8055(QalImpf) not thou, whole Palestina,H6429 because the rodH7626 of him that smoteH5221(HiphPtc) thee is broken:H7665(NiphPerf) for out of the serpent’sH5175 rootH8328 shall come forthH3318(QalImpf) a cockatrice,H6848 and his fruitH6529 [shall be] a fieryH8314 flyingH5774(PolePtc) serpent.H8314 [30] And the firstbornH1060 of the poorH1800 shall feed,H7462(QalPerf) and the needyH34 shall lie downH7257(QalImpf) in safety:H983 and I will killH4191(HiphPerf) thy rootH8328 with famine,H7458 and he shall slayH2026(QalImpf) thy remnant.H7611 [31] Howl,H3213(HiphImpv) O gate;H8179 cry,H2199(QalImpv) O city;H5892 thou, whole Palestina,H6429 [art] dissolved:H4127(NiphPerf) for there shall comeH935(QalPerf) from the northH6828 a smoke,H6227 and none [shall be] aloneH909(QalActPtc) in his appointed times.H4151 [32] What shall [one] then answerH6030(QalImpf) the messengersH4397 of the nation?H1471 That the LordH3068 hath foundedH3245(PielPerf) Zion,H6726 and the poorH6041 of his peopleH5971 shall trustH2620(QalImpf) in it.
