[1] In the days of Ahaz the son of Jotham, the son of Uzziah, king of Judah, Rezin the king of Syria and Pekah the son of Remaliah, king of Israel, went up to Jerusalem to war against it, but could not prevail against it. [2] David’s house was told, “Syria is allied with Ephraim.” His heart trembled, and the heart of his people, as the trees of the forest tremble with the wind. [3] Then Yahweh said to Isaiah, “Go out now to meet Ahaz, you, and Shearjashub your son, at the end of the conduit of the upper pool, on the highway of the fuller’s field. [4] Tell him, ‘Be careful, and keep calm. Don’t be afraid, neither let your heart be faint because of these two tails of smoking torches, for the fierce anger of Rezin and Syria, and of the son of Remaliah. [5] Because Syria, Ephraim, and the son of Remaliah, have plotted evil against you, saying, [6] “Let’s go up against Judah, and tear it apart, and let’s divide it among ourselves, and set up a king within it, even the son of Tabeel.” [7] This is what the Lord Yahweh says: “It shall not stand, neither shall it happen.” [8] For the head of Syria is Damascus, and the head of Damascus is Rezin. Within sixty-five years Ephraim shall be broken in pieces, so that it shall not be a people. [9] The head of Ephraim is Samaria, and the head of Samaria is Remaliah’s son. If you will not believe, surely you shall not be established.’ ” [10] Yahweh spoke again to Ahaz, saying, [11] “Ask a sign of Yahweh your God; ask it either in the depth, or in the height above.” [12] But Ahaz said, “I won’t ask. I won’t tempt Yahweh.” [13] He said, “Listen now, house of David. Is it not enough for you to try the patience of men, that you will try the patience of my God also? [14] Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign. Behold, the virgin will conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.ⓘ [15] He shall eat butter and honey when he knows to refuse the evil and choose the good. [16] For before the child knows to refuse the evil and choose the good, the land whose two kings you abhor shall be forsaken. [17] Yahweh will bring on you, on your people, and on your father’s house days that have not come, from the day that Ephraim departed from Judah, even the king of Assyria. [18] It will happen in that day that Yahweh will whistle for the fly that is in the uttermost part of the rivers of Egypt, and for the bee that is in the land of Assyria. [19] They shall come, and shall all rest in the desolate valleys, in the clefts of the rocks, on all thorn hedges, and on all pastures. [20] In that day the Lord will shave with a razor that is hired in the parts beyond the River, even with the king of Assyria, the head and the hair of the feet; and it shall also consume the beard. [21] It shall happen in that day that a man shall keep alive a young cow, and two sheep. [22] It shall happen, that because of the abundance of milk which they shall give he shall eat butter, for everyone will eat butter and honey that is left within the land. [23] It will happen in that day that every place where there were a thousand vines worth a thousand silver shekels,ⓘ will be for briers and thorns. [24] People will go there with arrows and with bow, because all the land will be briers and thorns. [25] All the hills that were cultivated with the hoe, you shall not come there for fear of briers and thorns; but it shall be for the sending out of oxen, and for sheep to tread on.”
Footnotes
- “Immanuel” means “God with us”.
- A shekel is about 10 grams or about 0.35 ounces, so 1000 shekels is about 10 kilograms or 22 pounds.
King James Version
[1] And it came to pass in the daysH3117 of AhazH271 the sonH1121 of Jotham,H3147 the sonH1121 of Uzziah,H5818 kingH4428 of Judah,H3063 [that] RezinH7526 the kingH4428 of Syria,H758 and PekahH6492 the sonH1121 of Remaliah,H7425 kingH4428 of Israel,H3478 went upH5927(QalPerf) toward JerusalemH3389 to warH4421 against it, but couldH3201(QalPerf) not prevailH3898(NiphInf) against it. [2] And it was toldH5046(HophImpf) the houseH1004 of David,H1732 saying,H559(QalInf) SyriaH758 is confederateH5117(QalPerf) with Ephraim.H669 And his heartH3824 was moved,H5128(QalImpf) and the heartH3824 of his people,H5971 as the treesH6086 of the woodH3293 are movedH5128(QalInf) withH6440 the wind.H7307 [3] Then saidH559(QalImpf) the LordH3068 unto Isaiah,H3470 Go forthH3318(QalImpv) now to meetH7125(QalInf) Ahaz,H271 thou, and ShearjashubH7610 thy son,H1121 at the endH7097 of the conduitH8585 of the upperH5945 poolH1295 in the highwayH4546 of the fuller’sH3526(QalPtc) field;H7704 [4] And sayH559(QalPerf) unto him, Take heed,H8104(NiphImpv) and be quiet;H8252(HiphImpv) fearH3372(QalImpf) not, neither be faintheartedH7401(NiphImpf) for the twoH8147 tailsH2180 of these smokingH6226 firebrands,H181 for the fierceH2750 angerH639 of RezinH7526 with Syria,H758 and of the sonH1121 of Remaliah.H7425 [5] Because Syria,H758 Ephraim,H669 and the sonH1121 of Remaliah,H7425 have taken evilH7451 counselH3289(QalPerf) against thee, saying,H559(QalInf) [6] Let us go upH5927(QalImpf) against Judah,H3063 and vexH6973(HiphImpf) it, and let us make a breachH1234(HiphImpf) therein for us, and setH4427(HiphImpf) a kingH4428 in the midstH8432 of it, [even] the sonH1121 of Tabeal:H2870 [7] ThusH3541 saithH559(QalPerf) the LordH136 God,H3069 It shall not stand,H6965(QalImpf) neither shall it come to pass. [8] For the headH7218 of SyriaH758 [is] Damascus,H1834 and the headH7218 of DamascusH1834 [is] Rezin;H7526 and within threescoreH8346 and fiveH2568 yearsH8141 shall EphraimH669 be broken,H2865(NiphImpf) that it be not a people.H5971 [9] And the headH7218 of EphraimH669 [is] Samaria,H8111 and the headH7218 of SamariaH8111 [is] Remaliah’sH7425 son.H1121 If ye will not believe,H539(HiphImpf) surely ye shall not be established.H539(NiphImpf) [10] Moreover the LordH3068 spakeH1696(PielInf) againH3254(HiphImpf) unto Ahaz,H271 saying,H559(QalInf) [11] AskH7592(QalImpv) thee a signH226 of the LordH3068 thy God;H430 askH7592(QalInf) it either in the depth,H6009(HiphImpv) or in the heightH1361(HiphInf) above.H4605 [12] But AhazH271 said,H559(QalImpf) I will not ask,H7592(QalImpf) neither will I temptH5254(PielImpf) the Lord.H3068 [13] And he said,H559(QalImpf) HearH8085(QalImpv) ye now, O houseH1004 of David;H1732 [Is it] a small thingH4592 for you to wearyH3811(HiphInf) men,H582 but will ye wearyH3811(HiphImpf) my GodH430 also? [14] Therefore the LordH136 himself shall giveH5414(QalImpf) you a sign;H226 Behold, a virginH5959 shall conceive,H2030 and bearH3205(QalActPtc) a son,H1121 and shall callH7121(QalPerf) his nameH8034 Immanuel.H6005 [15] ButterH2529 and honeyH1706 shall he eat,H398(QalImpf) that he may knowH3045(QalInf) to refuseH3988(QalInf) the evil,H7451 and chooseH977(QalInf) the good.H2896 [16] For before the childH5288 shall knowH3045(QalImpf) to refuseH3988(QalInf) the evil,H7451 and chooseH977(QalInf) the good,H2896 the landH127 that thou abhorrestH6973(QalPtc) shall beH6440 forsakenH5800(NiphImpf) of bothH8147 her kings.H4428 [17] The LordH3068 shall bringH935(HiphImpf) upon thee, and upon thy people,H5971 and upon thy father’sH1 house,H1004 daysH3117 that have not come,H935(QalPerf) from the dayH3117 that EphraimH669 departedH5493(QalInf) from Judah;H3063 [even] the kingH4428 of Assyria.H804 [18] And it shall come to pass in that day,H3117 [that] the LordH3068 shall hissH8319(QalImpf) for the flyH2070 that [is] in the uttermost partH7097 of the riversH2975 of Egypt,H4714 and for the beeH1682 that [is] in the landH776 of Assyria.H804 [19] And they shall come,H935(QalPerf) and shall restH5117(QalPerf) all of them in the desolateH1327 valleys,H5158 and in the holesH5357 of the rocks,H5553 and upon all thorns,H5285 and upon all bushes.H5097 [20] In the same dayH3117 shall the LordH136 shaveH1548(PielImpf) with a razorH8593 that is hired,H7917 [namely], by them beyondH5676 the river,H5104 by the kingH4428 of Assyria,H804 the head,H7218 and the hairH8181 of the feet:H7272 and it shall also consumeH5595(QalImpf) the beard.H2206 [21] And it shall come to pass in that day,H3117 [that] a manH376 shall nourishH2421(PielImpf) a youngH1241 cow,H5697 and twoH8147 sheep;H6629 [22] And it shall come to pass, for the abundanceH7230 of milkH2461 [that] they shall giveH6213(QalInf) he shall eatH398(QalImpf) butter:H2529 for butterH2529 and honeyH1706 shall every one eatH398(QalImpf) that is leftH3498(NiphPtc) inH7130 the land.H776 [23] And it shall come to pass in that day,H3117 [that] every placeH4725 shall be, where there were a thousandH505 vinesH1612 at a thousandH505 silverlings,H3701 it shall [even] be for briersH8068 and thorns.H7898 [24] With arrowsH2671 and with bowsH7198 shall [men] comeH935(QalImpf) thither; because all the landH776 shall become briersH8068 and thorns.H7898 [25] And [on] all hillsH2022 that shall be diggedH5737(NiphImpf) with the mattock,H4576 there shall not come thitherH935(QalImpf) the fearH3374 of briersH8068 and thorns:H7898 but it shall be for the sending forthH4916 of oxen,H7794 and for the treadingH4823 of lesser cattle.H7716
