[1] Woe to the crown of pride of the drunkards of Ephraim, and to the fading flower of his glorious beauty, which is on the head of the fertile valley of those who are overcome with wine! [2] Behold, the Lord has one who is mighty and strong. Like a storm of hail, a destroying storm, and like a storm of mighty waters overflowing, he will cast them down to the earth with his hand. [3] The crown of pride of the drunkards of Ephraim will be trodden under foot. [4] The fading flower of his glorious beauty, which is on the head of the fertile valley, shall be like the first-ripe fig before the summer, which someone picks and eats as soon as he sees it. [5] In that day, Yahweh of Armies will become a crown of glory and a diadem of beauty to the residue of his people, [6] and a spirit of justice to him who sits in judgment, and strength to those who turn back the battle at the gate. [7] They also reel with wine, and stagger with strong drink. The priest and the prophet reel with strong drink. They are swallowed up by wine. They stagger with strong drink. They err in vision. They stumble in judgment. [8] For all tables are completely full of filthy vomit and filthiness. [9] Whom will he teach knowledge? To whom will he explain the message? Those who are weaned from the milk, and drawn from the breasts? [10] For it is precept on precept, precept on precept; line on line, line on line; here a little, there a little. [11] But he will speak to this nation with stammering lips and in another language, [12] to whom he said, “This is the resting place. Give rest to the weary,” and “This is the refreshing;” yet they would not hear. [13] Therefore Yahweh’s word will be to them precept on precept, precept on precept; line on line, line on line; here a little, there a little; that they may go, fall backward, be broken, be snared, and be taken. [14] Therefore hear Yahweh’s word, you scoffers, that rule this people in Jerusalem: [15] “Because you have said, ‘We have made a covenant with death, and we are in agreement with Sheol. When the overflowing scourge passes through, it won’t come to us; for we have made lies our refuge, and we have hidden ourselves under falsehood.’ ” [16] Therefore the Lord Yahweh says, “Behold, I lay in Zion for a foundation a stone, a tried stone, a precious cornerstone of a sure foundation. He who believes shall not act hastily. [17] I will make justice the measuring line, and righteousness the plumb line. The hail will sweep away the refuge of lies, and the waters will overflow the hiding place. [18] Your covenant with death shall be annulled, and your agreement with Sheol shall not stand. When the overflowing scourge passes through, then you will be trampled down by it. [19] As often as it passes through, it will seize you; for morning by morning it will pass through, by day and by night; and it will be nothing but terror to understand the message.” [20] For the bed is too short to stretch out on, and the blanket is too narrow to wrap oneself in. [21] For Yahweh will rise up as on Mount Perazim. He will be angry as in the valley of Gibeon; that he may do his work, his unusual work, and bring to pass his act, his extraordinary act. [22] Now therefore don’t be scoffers, lest your bonds be made strong; for I have heard a decree of destruction from the Lord, Yahweh of Armies, on the whole earth. [23] Give ear, and hear my voice! Listen, and hear my speech! [24] Does he who plows to sow plow continually? Does he keep turning the soil and breaking the clods? [25] When he has leveled its surface, doesn’t he plant the dill, and scatter the cumin seed, and put in the wheat in rows, the barley in the appointed place, and the spelt in its place? [26] For his God instructs him in right judgment and teaches him. [27] For the dill isn’t threshed with a sharp instrument, neither is a cart wheel turned over the cumin; but the dill is beaten out with a stick, and the cumin with a rod. [28] Bread flour must be ground; so he will not always be threshing it. Although he drives the wheel of his threshing cart over it, his horses don’t grind it. [29] This also comes out from Yahweh of Armies, who is wonderful in counsel, and excellent in wisdom.

[1] WoeH1945 to the crownH5850 of pride,H1348 to the drunkardsH7910 of Ephraim,H669 whose gloriousH6643 beautyH8597 [is] a fadingH5034(QalActPtc) flower,H6731 which [are] on the headH7218 of the fatH8081 valleysH1516 of them that are overcomeH1986(QalPasPtc) with wine!H3196 [2] Behold, the LordH136 hath a mightyH2389 and strong one,H533 [which] as a tempestH2230 of hailH1259 [and] a destroyingH6986 storm,H8178 as a floodH2230 of mightyH3524 watersH4325 overflowing,H7857(QalActPtc) shall cast downH3240(HiphPerf) to the earthH776 with the hand.H3027 [3] The crownH5850 of pride,H1348 the drunkardsH7910 of Ephraim,H669 shall be troddenH7429(NiphImpf) under feet:H7272 [4] And the gloriousH6643 beauty,H8597 which [is] on the headH7218 of the fatH8081 valley,H1516 shall be a fadingH5034(QalActPtc) flower,H6733 [and] as the hasty fruitH1061 before the summer;H7019 which [when] he that lookethH7200(QalActPtc) upon it seeth,H7200(QalImpf) while it is yet in his handH3709 he eateth it up.H1104(QalImpf) [5] In that dayH3117 shall the LordH3068 of hostsH6635 be for a crownH5850 of glory,H6643 and for a diademH6843 of beauty,H8597 unto the residueH7605 of his people,H5971 [6] And for a spiritH7307 of judgmentH4941 to him that sittethH3427(QalActPtc) in judgment,H4941 and for strengthH1369 to them that turnH7725(HiphPtc) the battleH4421 to the gate.H8179 [7] But theyH428 also have erredH7686(QalPerf) through wine,H3196 and through strong drinkH7941 are out of the way;H8582(QalPerf) the priestH3548 and the prophetH5030 have erredH7686(QalPerf) through strong drink,H7941 they are swallowed upH1104(NiphPerf) ofH4480 wine,H3196 they are out of the wayH8582(QalPerf) through strong drink;H7941 they errH7686(QalPerf) in vision,H7203 they stumbleH6328(QalPerf) [in] judgment.H6417 [8] For all tablesH7979 are fullH4390(QalPerf) of vomitH6892 [and] filthiness,H6675 [so that there is] no placeH4725 [clean]. [9] Whom shall he teachH3384(HiphImpf) knowledge?H1844 and whom shall he make to understandH995(QalImpf) doctrine?H8052 [them that are] weanedH1580(QalPasPtc) from the milk,H2461 [and] drawnH6267 from the breasts.H7699 [10] For preceptH6673 [must be] upon precept,H6673 preceptH6673 upon precept;H6673 lineH6957 upon line,H6957 lineH6957 upon line;H6957 here a little,H2191 [and] there a little:H2191 [11] For with stammeringH3934 lipsH8193 and anotherH312 tongueH3956 will he speakH1696(PielImpf) to this people.H5971 [12] To whom he said,H559(QalPerf) This [is] the restH4496 [wherewith] ye may cause the wearyH5889 to rest;H5117(HiphImpv) and this [is] the refreshing:H4774 yet they wouldH14(QalPerf) not hear.H8085(QalInf) [13] But the wordH1697 of the LordH3068 was unto them preceptH6673 upon precept,H6673 preceptH6673 upon precept;H6673 lineH6957 upon line,H6957 lineH6957 upon line;H6957 here a little,H2191 [and] there a little;H2191 that they might go,H3212(QalImpf) and fallH3782(QalPerf) backward,H268 and be broken,H7665(NiphPerf) and snared,H3369(NiphPerf) and taken.H3920(NiphPerf) [14] Wherefore hearH8085(QalImpv) the wordH1697 of the Lord,H3068 ye scornfulH3944 men,H582 that ruleH4910(QalActPtc) this peopleH5971 which [is] in Jerusalem.H3389 [15] Because ye have said,H559(QalPerf) We have madeH3772(QalPerf) a covenantH1285 with death,H4194 and with hellH7585 are weH6213(QalPerf) at agreement;H2374 when the overflowingH7857(QalActPtc) scourgeH7752(Qere) shall pass through,H5674(QalImpf/Qere) it shall not comeH935(QalImpf) unto us: for we have madeH7760(QalPerf) liesH3577 our refuge,H4268 and under falsehoodH8267 have we hidH5641(NiphPerf) ourselves: [16] Therefore thus saithH559(QalPerf) the LordH136 God,H3069 Behold, I layH3245(PielPerf) in ZionH6726 for a foundation a stone,H68 a triedH976 stone,H68 a preciousH3368 cornerH6438 [stone], a sureH3245(HophPtc) foundation:H4143 he that believethH539(HiphPtc) shall not make haste.H2363(HiphImpf) [17] JudgmentH4941 also will I layH7760(QalPerf) to the line,H6957 and righteousnessH6666 to the plummet:H4949 and the hailH1259 shall sweep awayH3261(QalPerf) the refugeH4268 of lies,H3577 and the watersH4325 shall overflowH7857(QalImpf) the hiding place.H5643 [18] And your covenantH1285 with deathH4194 shall be disannulled,H3722(PualPerf) and your agreementH2380 with hellH7585 shall not stand;H6965(QalImpf) when the overflowingH7857(QalActPtc) scourgeH7752 shall pass through,H5674(QalImpf) then ye shall be trodden downH4823 by it. [19] From the timeH1767 that it goeth forthH5674(QalInf) it shall takeH3947(QalImpf) you: for morningH1242 by morningH1242 shall it pass over,H5674(QalImpf) by dayH3117 and by night:H3915 and it shall be a vexationH2113 only [to] understandH995(HiphInf) the report.H8052 [20] For the bedH4702 is shorterH7114(QalPerf) than that [a man] can stretchH8311(HithInf) himself [on it]: and the coveringH4541 narrowerH6887(QalPerf) than that he can wrapH3664(HithInf) himself [in it]. [21] For the LordH3068 shall rise upH6965(QalImpf) as [in] mountH2022 Perazim,H6559 he shall be wrothH7264(QalImpf) as [in] the valleyH6010 of Gibeon,H1391 that he may doH6213(QalInf) his work,H4639 his strangeH2114(QalPtc) work;H4639 and bring to passH5647(QalInf) his act,H5656 his strangeH5237 act.H5656 [22] Now therefore be ye not mockers,H3887(HippImpf) lest your bandsH4147 be made strong:H2388(QalImpf) for I have heardH8085(QalPerf) from the LordH136 GodH3069 of hostsH6635 a consumption,H3617 even determinedH2782(NiphPtc) upon the whole earth.H776 [23] Give ye ear,H238(HiphImpv) and hearH8085(QalImpv) my voice;H6963 hearken,H7181(HiphImpv) and hearH8085(QalImpv) my speech.H565 [24] Doth the plowmanH2790(QalActPtc) plowH2790(QalImpf) all dayH3117 to sow?H2232(QalInf) doth he openH6605(PielImpf) and break the clodsH7702(PielImpf) of his ground?H127 [25] When he hath made plainH7737(PielPerf) the faceH6440 thereof, doth he not cast abroadH6327(HiphPerf) the fitches,H7100 and scatterH2236(QalImpf) the cummin,H3646 and castH7760(QalPerf) in the principalH7795 wheatH2406 and the appointedH5567(NiphPtc) barleyH8184 and the rieH3698 in their place?H1367 [26] For his GodH430 doth instructH3256(PielPerf) him to discretion,H4941 [and] doth teachH3384(HiphImpf) him. [27] For the fitchesH7100 are not threshedH1758(HophImpf) with a threshing instrument,H2742 neither is a cartH5699 wheelH212 turned aboutH5437(HophImpf) upon the cummin;H3646 but the fitchesH7100 are beaten outH2251(NiphImpf) with a staff,H4294 and the cumminH3646 with a rod.H7626 [28] BreadH3899 [corn] is bruised;H1854(HophImpf) because he will not everH5331 be threshingH156(QalInf) it, nor breakH2000(QalPerf) [it with] the wheelH1536 of his cart,H5699 nor bruiseH1854(QalImpf) it [with] his horsemen.H6571 [29] This also cometh forthH3318(QalPerf) from the LordH3068 of hosts,H6635 [which] is wonderfulH6381(HiphPerf) in counsel,H6098 [and] excellentH1431(HiphPerf) in working.H8454
